Participation in the Design Challenge keeps curriculum current, encourages student creativity, provides an industrybased activity, and reinforces your Drafting or Art program. The educational benefit of the Competition is to give students a problem that requires the practical application of the Design Process. The Design Process starts with a concept sketch or idea, is then refined, and finally developed into a functional part. Students are given an industry based problem and are challenged with finding a design solution. CAD Drafting and artistic skills that students have gained in their classes can be directly applied to an automotive based design problem with the Design Challenge.
Design Concept - The Design Concept Category will ask the student to propose a creative and aesthetic design solution to a given automotive application. The student will follow the Design Process which starts with a rough concept sketch followed by a depiction of refinements to achieve a final design rendering. The presentation can be made as a free hand rendering, any computer graphic program, scale model, or any combination of these.
Creative Engineering Design Category - The Engineering Design Category challenges drafting students to develop a design solution to a given automotive-based problem. Consideration is given to the design’s innovation, functionality, appearance, mounting and/or attachments. The Creative Engineering Category utilizes drafting/CAD skills and must be submitted on paper as a properly made engineering drawing using orthographic projection.
