Design Challenge Award Banquet

The asbe Foundation will hold its annual Awards Program on April 10th, 2025. This is our opportunity to honor outstanding student achievement at both the high school and collegiate level.

Awards will be given to the winners of the High School Design Challenge. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving college and university students.

Lon Zaback

Lon Zaback is an accomplished leader in product strategy with extensive expertise in design, business development, brand management, and product delivery. Lon’s deep understanding of the global mobility industry enables him to excel in fostering collaborative relationships and driving results across all levels of an organization. Known for his exceptional communication skills and ability to build trust, Lon effectively engages teams and stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.

Throughout his career, Lon has demonstrated a proven track record in automotive leadership, successfully managing strategic planning and product development from concept to production. In his current role at Hyundai Mobis Technical Center America, he leads R&D strategy and planning, focusing on product planning for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles (AV), infotainment, electrification, and regulatory compliance. He also oversees competitive benchmarking, market analysis, and the promotion of innovative technologies to North American OEMs.

Lon’s previous experience spans 26 years at Ford Motor Company, where he held several key roles, including Creative Design Manager, Global Design Operations Manager, and Bronco and Ranger Product Planning Manager. He was instrumental in the design and production of iconic models such as the Ford Ranger, Focus, Super Duty, and Taurus, and played a central role in the concept design of vehicles including the Mighty F350 Tonka and Ford EX.

A passionate mentor, Lon is dedicated to helping young adults develop professionally. He has served as a FIRST Robotics Mentor, Henry Ford Academy Board Member, and a Ford Motor Company Fund Sponsor where he awarded scholarships to deserving students. Lon has also contributed his expertise as a sponsor and judge for business and creative competitions at renowned institutions such as Michigan State University, Lawrence Technological University, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and the College for Creative Studies.

Lon is a 1988 graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit where he earned his degree in Industrial / Transportation Design. Outside of his professional life, he and his wife enjoy traveling and are avid boaters. They are incredibly proud of their three children who collectively hold an MBA, a PhD in nuclear physics, and a PhD in computer science and AI.

Known for his detail-oriented approach and strategic problem-solving skills, Lon is a respected leader in the automotive industry recognized for valuing relationship-building, communication, organization, and presentation. He is driven by a commitment to innovation and empowering teams to deliver high-quality solutions that drive business growth and long-term success.
